A planet caught in the act of being born
Overview
PDS 70 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 3.2 Jupiters, it takes 119.2 years to complete one orbit of its star, and is 20.8 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2018.

Why it matters
- In 2018 the VLT's SPHERE captured the first confirmed image of a planet forming inside a disk gap.
- A sibling, PDS 70 c, hosts a moon-forming circumplanetary disk seen by ALMA.
- The system is only about 5 million years old, 370 light-years away.
NASA puts it this way: “PDS 70 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 3 Jupiters, it takes 119.2 years to complete one orbit of its star, and is 20.0 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2018.”
