A cool super-Earth that could stay habitable with a thick CO2 blanket
Overview
Kepler-62f is a super-Earth exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of the orange dwarf star Kepler-62, the outermost of five such planets discovered around the star by NASA's Kepler space telescope. It is located about 982 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Lyra.

NASA: Kepler-62 f is a super Earth exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 35 Earths, it takes 267.3 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.718 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2013.
Why it matters
- One of five planets found around Kepler-62 in 2013; it orbits every 267 days.
- About 1.4 Earth radii, near the outer edge of the habitable zone.
- Climate models suggest oceans could remain liquid with enough greenhouse gases.
NASA puts it this way: “Kepler-62 f is a super Earth exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 35 Earths, it takes 267.3 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.718 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2013.”
