A wobbling circumbinary world with wildly erratic seasons

Overview

Kepler-413b is a circumbinary planet orbiting stars Kepler-413 A and Kepler-413 B, which respectively are K and M dwarfs. These host stars orbit each other with orbital period of 10.1 days.

NASA: Kepler-413 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 0.211 Jupiters, it takes 66.3 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.3553 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2014.

Why it matters

  • Orbits a pair of orange and red dwarfs every 66 days, but its transits appear and disappear for years.
  • Its orbit precesses every 11 years and its spin axis may tilt by 30 degrees, producing chaotic seasons.
  • Discovered in 2014 as an example of how misaligned circumbinary systems can be.

NASA puts it this way: “Kepler-413 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 0.211 Jupiters, it takes 66.3 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.3553 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2014.”
