NASA (Exoplanet Catalog artwork)TOI-849 b
The exposed core of a giant planet, stripped of its gas
Overview
TOI-849 b is an exoplanet orbiting the late-G type star TOI-849. It is a candidate chthonian planet, the exposed core of a gas giant that had much of its atmosphere stripped away. It is around 700 light-years away from Earth.

NASA: TOI-849 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 0.13151751 Jupiters, it takes 0.8 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.0155 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2020.
Why it matters
- Forty Earth masses packed into a Neptune-sized body with an 18-hour orbit.
- Sits deep in the 'Neptunian desert' where such planets are rarely found.
- Either lost its envelope to its star or never managed to accrete one.
NASA puts it this way: “A world called TOI 849 b could be the exposed, naked core of a gas giant whose atmosphere was blasted away by its star.”
