TESS's first Earth-sized planet in a habitable zone
Overview
TOI-700 d is a dense, rocky, near-Earth-sized exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of the red dwarf TOI-700. It is located roughly 101.4 light-years (31.1 pc) away from Earth in the constellation of Dorado and is the outermost of four confirmed exoplanets around its star. The exoplanet is the first Earth-sized exoplanet in the habitable zone discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

NASA: TOI-700 d is a super Earth exoplanet that orbits a M-type star. Its mass is 1.58 Earths, it takes 37.4 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.1642 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2020.
Why it matters
- Found in 2020 around a quiet red dwarf about 100 light-years away.
- Orbits every 37 days, receiving about 86% of the light Earth gets.
- A fourth planet, TOI-700 e, was added in 2023 — also Earth-sized and in the optimistic habitable zone.
NASA puts it this way: “TOI-700 d is a super Earth exoplanet that orbits an M-type star. Its mass is 1.25 Earths, it takes 37.4 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.1633 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2020.”
