The first planet caught spiralling into an ageing star

Overview

Kepler-1658 is a triple star system located in the constellation Cygnus. Based on parallax measurements by the Gaia spacecraft, it is located at a distance of 2,660 light-years.

Why it matters

  • Kepler's very first planet candidate (KOI-1), only confirmed in 2019.
  • Its 3.85-day orbit is shrinking by about 131 milliseconds per year.
  • Will be consumed by its subgiant host in under 3 million years.
As of Nov 2025 the NASA Exoplanet Archive resolves the name but no longer lists it in its confirmed-planet tables; verify current status before publishing.
