A super-Jupiter that spends decades in the cold, then slingshots past its star
Overview
HR 5183 b is an exoplanet located 102.7 light years away in the constellation of Virgo orbiting the star HR 5183. It has a mass of 3.31 MJ. It has a highly eccentric (e≃0.87) orbit which takes it from within the orbit of Jupiter to beyond the orbit of Neptune which classifies it as an eccentric Jupiter and it has been nicknamed the "whiplash planet". It was discovered in 2019 based on two decades of radial velocity observations.

NASA: HR 5183 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a G-type star. Its mass is 3.31 Jupiters, it takes 74 years to complete one orbit of its star, and is 18 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2019.
Why it matters
- Eccentricity around 0.84 on a roughly 75-year orbit; discovered in 2019 after decades of monitoring.
- Ranges from inside Jupiter's distance out beyond Neptune's.
- If placed in our Solar System it would cross several planetary orbits.
NASA puts it this way: “HR 5183 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a G-type star. Its mass is 3.31 Jupiters, it takes 74 years to complete one orbit of its star, and is 18.0 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2019.”
