A deep-blue hot Jupiter with glass rain, hypersonic winds and a rotten-egg smell
Overview
HD 189733 b is an exoplanet in the constellation of Vulpecula approximately 64.5 light-years away from the Solar System. Astronomers in France discovered the planet orbiting the star HD 189733 on October 5, 2005, by observing its transit across the star's face. With a mass 11.2% higher than that of Jupiter and a radius 11.4% greater, HD 189733 b orbits its host star once every 2.2 days at an orbital speed of 152.0 kilometers per second, making it a hot Jupiter with poor prospects for extraterrestrial life.

NASA: HD 189733 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 1.13 Jupiters, it takes 2.2 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.03126 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2005.
Why it matters
- Its blue colour, measured by Hubble in 2013, comes from silicate particles scattering light — not oceans.
- Winds of about 8,700 km/h sweep molten glass sideways; a 2024 JWST study found hydrogen sulfide.
- The closest transiting hot Jupiter to Earth at 64 light-years, so one of the best-studied exoplanets.
NASA puts it this way: “This far-off blue planet may look like a friendly haven – but don’t be deceived! Weather here is deadly. The planet’s cobalt blue color comes from a hazy, blow-torched atmosphere containing clouds laced with glass. ”
